The Band Does It All
The supportive band of a well-fitting bra is like your secret superpower – it helps keep everything in place, giving you that extra bit of confidence throughout the day. Whether it’s with a wide or narrow band, having the perfect fit will make sure that you feel secure and supported without any extra bulk or discomfort. The supportive band of your bra is like a hug for your body – it wraps around you and provides the perfect balance between style and comfort. “Your band should be level and parallel to the floor,” says Harrington. “It shouldn’t be hitching upon side or in the shape of an arch or lifting up in the back. If it is, it means it’s not giving you the support you need (remember: most of the support in a bra comes from the band).”
Get The MeasurementsGetting the right measurements is key to finding the perfect bra fit. You don’t have to leave your home to find out what size you are—simply grab your tape measure and get accurate measurements in the comfort of your own home. So, you’ll need two measurements: around your back and under your bust for your band size, and around your back over your nipples for your cup size. You’ll then subtract the difference. For instance, if your bust measures 35 inches and your under-bust (or rib cage) 32 inches, you’ll be a 32C because 35 minus 32 equals 3, and that number corresponds to the letter “C” in the alphabet. Or if you could visit a professional bra fitter or lingerie boutique and they’ll be able to take your measurements for you!
Choose The Right Cup and Band Size for Your Breasts
When it comes to finding the perfect bra, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. “It’s perfectly normal to wear multiple sizes,” Harrington says, “especially as you change brands or styles or even times of the month. The size you wear in a strapless bra may not the size you wear in a plunge, or the size you wear in Panache may not be the size you wear in Wacoal. Don’t get hung up on being one specific size. Instead, pay attention to how the bra feels on your body.”
Make Sure the Center Is Flat Against Your Chest
The center panel of a well-fitting bra should always lay flat against your chest, with no gaping or bunching. “The gore (that center piece between the two cups) should lay flat against your sternum. This is called ‘tacking’ and it helps to anchor the bra,” says Harrington. “If the gore is floating off the body or moving around, you’re going to get a lot of shifting and wiggling in the cups. The major exception to this guideline? Wirefree bras. Bras without wires won’t have a gore that tacks.”
Find A Bra That Fits Comfortably
Take the time to try on different styles, sizes and brands until you find the one that feels like it was made for you. Don’t be afraid to go up a cup size or down a band size. “The biggest mistake or issue I see is people not being willing to spend the time to try different brands and styles and shapes,” says Harrington.
Try Out Different Styles
If you’re looking to jump-start your lingerie wardrobe, it’s time to try out some different bra styles. “Bras are not created equal,” says Barbieri, “There’s so many different styles out there for so many different body types.” Explore different options for the best fit and comfort. Find a style that will hug your curves in all the right places. “Every woman should have five types of bras: t-shirt, seamed, strapless, sexy, and leisure,” adds Kaplan.
Have Different Bra Styles For Different Purposes
-A supportive, seamless traditional-style t-shirt bra to keep you comfortable and confident throughout the day.
-A strapless for that special night out, with a hint of sexy detail to make sure you stand out from the crowd.
-A sports bra for a bop around the park, designed to keep your assets in check while you show off your moves.
-An intricate seamed bra for when you want to add some flair, with the support and lift that comes with it.
-A silky and sultry piece when you want to feel your most glamorous.
-A bralette or non-underwire for when you just want to stay in and relax.
-A convertible bra for all your wardrobe needs, with straps that can be adjusted for any neckline.
