The world is a fascinating place, full of mysteries and surprises that challenge our understanding of reality. Just when we think we’ve got it all figured out, something comes along that makes us question everything we thought we knew. From mind-bending scientific discoveries to bizarre historical facts, here are 11 interesting things that can completely flip our ideas about the world upside down.

1. Time Is Relative

Thanks to Einstein’s theory of relativity, we know that time isn’t as fixed as we once believed. Time can actually slow down or speed up depending on how fast you’re moving or how strong gravity is around you. For example, astronauts on the International Space Station age slightly slower than people on Earth because they’re moving at incredibly high speeds. This means that if you traveled close to the speed of light, you could theoretically experience years while only a few days pass on Earth. Mind-blowing, right?

2. The Earth Isn’t Flat (But It’s Not a Perfect Sphere Either)

We all know the Earth isn’t flat, but did you know it’s not a perfect sphere either? Due to its rotation, the Earth bulges at the equator and flattens at the poles, making it an “oblate spheroid.” This means if you stood at the equator, you’d be slightly farther from the Earth’s center than if you were at one of the poles. It’s a small difference, but it’s enough to make you rethink what you learned in geography class.

3. Your Gut Is Like a Second Brain

Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria that play a crucial role in your overall health. But here’s the kicker: your gut has its own nervous system, often called the “second brain.” This network of neurons can influence your mood, behavior, and even decision-making. Ever had a “gut feeling”? That’s your second brain talking. Scientists are now exploring how gut health is linked to mental health, suggesting that what you eat could affect how you think and feel.

4. The Universe Is Mostly Made of Stuff We Can’t See

Everything we can see—stars, planets, galaxies—makes up less than 5% of the universe. The rest is composed of dark matter and dark energy, two mysterious substances that we can’t directly observe. Dark matter holds galaxies together, while dark energy is causing the universe to expand at an accelerating rate. Despite decades of research, we still don’t fully understand what these things are. It’s humbling to realize that most of the universe is completely invisible to us.

5. You’re Related to Bananas

Yes, you read that right. Humans share about 60% of their DNA with bananas. This doesn’t mean you’re half banana, but it does highlight how interconnected all life on Earth is. In fact, we share even more DNA with other animals—98% with chimpanzees and 90% with cats. This shared genetic code is a reminder that all living things evolved from a common ancestor billions of years ago.

6. There Are More Trees on Earth Than Stars in the Milky Way

When you look up at the night sky, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of stars. But did you know there are more trees on Earth than stars in our galaxy? Scientists estimate there are about 3 trillion trees on our planet, while the Milky Way has “only” 100-400 billion stars. This surprising fact puts into perspective just how lush and vibrant our planet is compared to the vast, empty expanse of space.

7. Cleopatra Lived Closer to the Moon Landing Than to the Building of the Great Pyramid

History has a way of playing tricks on our perception of time. Cleopatra, the last active ruler of ancient Egypt, lived around 30 BCE. The Great Pyramid of Giza was built around 2560 BCE, making it roughly 2,500 years older than Cleopatra. Meanwhile, the moon landing happened in 1969, just under 2,000 years after Cleopatra’s time. This means Cleopatra was chronologically closer to the moon landing than to the construction of one of Egypt’s most iconic landmarks.

8. There’s a Fish That Can Climb Trees

Meet the mangrove killifish, a small fish that can survive out of water for months and even climb trees. Found in mangrove forests, this incredible creature has adapted to live in environments where water levels fluctuate dramatically. When its habitat dries up, the killifish burrows into the mud and breathes through its skin. If that’s not impressive enough, it can also use its fins to wiggle up tree roots. Who knew fish could be so versatile?

9. The Human Brain Can’t Multitask

Despite what many of us believe, the human brain isn’t actually capable of multitasking. What we think of as multitasking is really just our brain switching rapidly between tasks. This constant switching can reduce productivity and increase the likelihood of errors. So, the next time you’re tempted to check your phone while working, remember that your brain works best when it focuses on one thing at a time.

10. There’s a Fungus That Can Control Ants’ Minds

In the rainforests of Thailand, a parasitic fungus called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis infects ants and takes control of their bodies. The fungus manipulates the ant’s behavior, forcing it to climb to a high point and clamp onto a leaf. Once the ant is in position, the fungus kills it and grows a stalk out of its head to release spores. This real-life “zombie ant” phenomenon is both fascinating and terrifying, showing just how complex and strange nature can be.

11. You’re Never Really Touching Anything

At a fundamental level, everything is made up of atoms, which are mostly empty space. When you “touch” something, what you’re actually feeling is the electromagnetic force between the atoms in your hand and the atoms in the object. This means that, technically, you’ve never truly touched anything in your life. It’s a strange thought, but it highlights the incredible complexity of the physical world.

Final Thoughts

The world is full of surprises that challenge our assumptions and expand our understanding. Whether it’s the mysteries of the universe, the quirks of nature, or the strange truths about our own bodies, these 11 facts remind us that there’s always more to learn. So, the next time you feel like you’ve got it all figured out, remember: the world is far more fascinating—and far stranger—than we can imagine. Keep questioning, keep exploring, and who knows what other mind-blowing discoveries await!
